The Cave was opened a couple of years after Tanuki Japanese Restaurant (above us) and with very little fanfare. After a slow start (people did not want to venture down some stairs not knowing what was at the bottom!) we are still here 30 years later!
We’d like to thank all of our diners and amazing staff over the years for making the Cave what it is, a little slice of Japan in the heart of Auckland
Our founder was Rick Littlewood, a man who loved Japan, eating and drinking! With no previous restaurant experience he set about recreating the izakaya experience that he loved so much from his countless visits to Japan to practice judo, meeting his Japanese in-laws and stay in his machiya (traditional townhouse) in Kyoto

Tanuki, our other restaurant upstairs is open Wednesday to Sunday and unlike us, they take reservations for ALL tables.
